Join other moms at Moms Morning Out in North Attleboro on Wednesday, September 8th at 6:30 p.m. for Autism 411, a presentation by Autism Speaks. Autism 411 hopes to educate area moms about Autism, the signs, symptoms and resources available.
One in 110 children was just diagnosed with Autism, 1 in 70 boys, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Currently, there is a new diagnosis every twenty minutes. Do you know the signs that you should be looking out for?
Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The other pervasive developmental disorders are PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified), Asperger’s Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Many parents and professionals refer to this group as Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Presently, there is not a medical test for autism; a diagnosis is based on observed behavior and educational and psychological testing. Treatment for autism is a very intensive, comprehensive undertaking that involves the child’s entire family and a team of professionals. Some programs may take place in the child’s home with professionals and trained therapists and may include Parent Training for the child under supervision of a professional. Some programs are delivered in a specialized center, classroom or preschool.
This is a free program. Space is limited, so please RSVP early to Theresa Mahoney at mamahoney2@gmail.com.
